Children often have difficulty with change whether it be a big change such as parental divorce or transitioning from playtime to bedtime. These issues can manifest as behavioral and or emotional difficulties such as acting out or being anxious. Often times trouble adjusting to an event or situation is manifested as poor performance in school and temporary changes in social relationships. In therapy for adjustment and transitional issues I like to ensure that parents are providing consistency in the home. I also use a skill I like to call “transitional storyelling”.
